This Sunday, more than 50 players and staff from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are participating in the NFL's My Cause My Cleats campaign, a league-wide initiative that offers teams the opportunity to promote charitable causes that are important to them through creative cleat designs. What does it take to be a great cleat artist? Dorsey: “Creativity and originality. That’s one of the things I always speak about. I try to differentiate from the different artists is that we’re all artists, we’re all unique, we all have our own thing, so just be yourself. Do you. “As far as cleats, I say the whole creativity part, that’s where the illustrated creation comes in. We are creating a shoe. Everything that I do, I want to be able to make something that you won’t see on the sneaker shelves. When you go to your local store or you want to look online, you won’t find anything else like this, and I think I’ve done a really good job of just sticking to that, and being different and unique.”

Eric Dorsey never considered himself artistic. But one day last year he was inspired to paint designs on a pair of cleats after he saw a couple pros wearing them. He used connections he made coaching arena football teams to convince a few professional players to let him decorate their cleats. Dorsey’s fledgling business—Illustrative Cre8ions—exploded.
